The Department of Education is increasing the allowance for students under the Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students (FANS) program.
Following a comprehensive review of FANS, the Government of Nunavut will implement recommended changes:
- Significant increases to the living allowance, including a new housing allowance.
- Increase for a single student going to school down south from approx. $1,500/month to $2,900/month.
- Simplification of funding – grants for Inuit and loans for non-Inuit.
- Significant increase in the disability grant amount.
- Removal of strict enrolment deadlines.
- More flexibility for students who withdraw – making it easier to reapply later.
The department will replace FANS next year with a reworked student support program that includes additional non-financial student support and a new program name.
