Nunavut premier responds to high-altitude object shot down over Yukon

Iqaluit, Nunavut

Today, Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok released the following statement:

“I wish to acknowledge the importance of security in the Canadian Arctic, following the February 11 incident that saw a high-altitude object shot down over Yukon. Thank you to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for taking swift action to protect the Arctic and our sovereignty after the unidentified object violated Canadian airspace. Nunavut supports the Yukon and is relieved there was no risk to public safety.

Our government has been briefed by Joint Task Force North. We have no reason to believe there are any immediate threats to Nunavut. We are actively monitoring the situation and will keep Nunavummiut informed as details become available.

This incident highlights the need for Northerners to be fully involved in discussions surrounding Arctic security and we look forward to further collaboration between the three Northern territories and the Government of Canada through its Department of National Defence.”
