Emergency Preparedness Week takes place from May 3 to 9, 2026, and the Department of Community Services’ emergency management division is encouraging residents across the territory to take simple steps to be ready for emergencies.
In Nunavut, we don’t travel alone – we travel prepared. Taking the time to plan ahead, at home or on the land, can make a real difference for you, your family and your community.
This year’s theme, Be Prepared. Know Your Risks., encourages everyone to understand the risks around them and take steps to be ready.
Throughout the week, Nunavut emergency management will be sharing practical tips and resources, including the release of a new video on how SPOT devices can support safe land travel and communication in remote areas.
Residents are encouraged to:
Tell someone about your travel plans before heading out.
Check weather and ice conditions.
Carry the right equipment, including extra supplies and a reliable communication device.
Keep an emergency kit at home and when travelling.
Preparedness looks different in every community, but taking small steps now can make a big difference when it matters most.
To sign out a SPOT device, visit your local Hamlet of wildlife office.
