Working together for a TB free Nunavut: GN and NTI reaffirm 2030 goal

Iqaluit, Nunavut (March 24, 2026) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) are marking World Tuberculosis Day by reaffirming their shared commitment to eliminating tuberculosis (TB) in Nunavut by 2030. Together, we are strengthening TB prevention, screening, treatment and awareness in ways that reflect Inuit needs, priorities and community knowledge across the territory.

Ending TB is a commitment to support families, protect future generations, and work alongside communities.

“The GN remains dedicated to this work,” said Health Minister Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster. “Together with NTI, we will continue to stand with all partners to ensure every person has access to the care and support they need. Together, we are moving toward a TB‑free Nunavut.”

TB remains a significant public health concern in Nunavut. However, the number of people with active TB in Nunavut has been decreasing in recent years, in part due to expanded TB screening and increases in treatment of TB infections (sleeping TB). NTI has provided substantial funding to GN to support these efforts, and to hamlets for locally led responses in communities with TB outbreaks.

“It is time to end TB in Nunavut,” said NTI President Paul Irngaut. “Inuit have carried the burden of TB for far too long. Its continued impact is a reminder of painful experiences that have shaped our families and communities for generations. NTI stands with our communities and the GN to help heal these wounds as we work together to strengthen and improve access to TB care and build approaches rooted in Inuit values.”

GN and NTI are advancing long-term solutions to support TB programming, including community engagement and wellness initiatives. This reflects a shared understanding that eliminating TB requires addressing both medical needs and the social determinants of health, such as housing, food security, and access to healthcare.

Through sustained partnership, community leadership, and culturally grounded approaches, a TB‑free future for Inuit communities is within reach.
