Iqaluit, Nunavut (February 2, 2026) – Nunavut’s full cabinet spent the last week of January in Ottawa to advocate for the territory’s unique needs and build relationships with their federal minister counterparts. Premier John Main and his colleagues held numerous meetings and made clear that investments in Nunavut need to start with improving quality of life and opportunities for Nunavummiut.
“It was important that Nunavut’s ministers meet with key members of Canada’s cabinet to highlight the realities of our territory,” said Premier Main. “Our cabinet is a strong team, and advancing our individual portfolios was strengthened by highlighting the interconnectedness of our needs. As attention increases on Arctic security, it is vital that we press for human security in Canada’s Arctic as well. Nunavummiut’s needs will always be the focus of this cabinet.”
In addition to meetings with the federal ministers of Northern and Arctic Affairs, Crown-Indigenous Relations, Indigenous Services, Transport, Internal Trade, and National Defence and others, Premier Main met with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Canada’s First Ministers. Cabinet also spent significant time with Nunavut Senator Nancy Karetak-Lindell and Nunavut MP Lori Idlout, discussing a shared vision for a strong, safe and thriving Arctic.
Premier Main and the cabinet team look forward to building on these initial meetings and creating lasting, long-term investments to improve services and programs for Nunavummiut.
