Premier John Main, Minister responsible for Seniors, today issued the following statement:
“On National Seniors Day, I encourage all Nunavummiut to honour our Elders today and every day. Our Elders learned how to survive and thrive on the land, and helped make Nunavut what it is today. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do.
As outlined in Ikajuqtigiikta, our government is implementing the Aging With Dignity Elders and Seniors Strategy, improving access to health care and Elder care services closer to home. We are working to grow our capacity to enable Elders to remain close to family and friends in Nunavut, with plans for long-term care facilities in Cambridge Bay and Iqaluit to expand on the success of the Kivalliq Long-Term Care Centre in Rankin Inlet.
I invite you to take the time today to check in on an Elder, plan a visit, share a meal together, or simply stop to chat. Our Elders are a vital part of our society, and have wisdom we must maintain to move forward. Matna."
