Premier Main and Minister Healey Akearok comment on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Today, Premier John Main and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Dr. Gwen Healey Akearok issued the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

“Violence has no place in our communities. The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is an annual reminder that all Nunavummiut, and especially men, need to speak out and act daily to prevent violence against women, girls and gender-diverse people.

With funding from the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, the Government of Nunavut and our partners offer responsive, culturally grounded supports if you or someone you know is experiencing violence.

Let’s work together to build a future where everyone – especially women and girls – can live safely, with dignity and hope.”

  • Premier John Main

“Many of us in Nunavut have been touched by violence – in our own lives or through the experience of family, friends, or neighbours. This reality is deeply personal in our communities, and it reminds us of why this work is so important.

We honour survivors and we honour those we have lost by committing ourselves to real, lasting change. Every woman, girl, and gender-diverse person deserves to live in safety and dignity.”
