Executive council begins drafting mandate priorities

Arviat, Nunavut (December 19, 2025) – The Government of Nunavut’s executive council met in Arviat December 15 to 19 to begin drafting priorities for the 7th Assembly’s mandate, to be released in 2026.

“As MLA for Arviat North-Whale Cove, I’m proud that Arviat hosted executive council this week, and I want to thank the community for the warm welcome and generosity shown throughout the retreat,” said Premier John Main. “This retreat was an important first step in drafting mandate priorities grounded in what Nunavut needs most, and I look forward to working with full caucus to sharpen that focus. This is about a better way forward, with clear priorities, shared responsibility, and delivering practical improvements people can see."

The executive council discussed potential themes to help organize and focus the mandate priorities, including:

  • Support and empower families and communities.
  • Drive local economic growth and employment.
  • Improve efficiency while strengthening partnerships.
  • Build a stronger future for all Nunavummiut.

The retreat included a day of meetings with Inuit organization leadership, which culminated in the renewal of the Partnership Declaration with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Premier Main also hosted a community feast and Cabinet members took time to visit various workplaces in the community.

In January, Cabinet will refine the draft priorities, identify high-level actions under each theme, and confirm how progress will be measured and reported.

Premier Main will table the mandate statement in the legislative assembly in March 2026, alongside the Commissioner’s opening address opening the 2nd Session of the 7th Legislative Assembly.
