Council of the Federation Literacy Award

Strengthening Inuit societal values is achieved through lifelong learning that recognizes the value of teaching and learning in the home, community and workplace. That learning is focused on sharing knowledge between elders, youth, parents, teachers and students.

Like all Canadians, Nunavummiut believe that strong literacy skills are the building blocks for development of a vibrant society and economy.

In 2004, the Premiers created the Council of the Federation Literacy Award medallion to bring annual recognition to achievements in literacy in every province and territory.

By developing strong language skills, Nunavummiut will continue to preserve their unique culture, using Inuit societal values to help build Nunavut’s expanding economy.

Encouraging and improving literacy is part of continuing learning. Literacy skills include promoting use of Inuktitut and other languages in a variety of ways: reading, writing, speaking, understanding, interpreting, translating, developing thinking skills, using computers, working with numbers and helping others with language.

2012 Premier’s Council of the Federation Literacy Award Nunavut

The 2012 Premier’s Council of the Federation of Literacy Award will honour the achievements of an adult learner who has worked to promote their language and supported, encouraged and shared with others ways to strengthen their language skills.

He or she could be a student, a teacher, a community volunteer, an elder, or a co-worker who has helped and inspired others in a literacy program in the last two years.

The winning nominee will be recognized with an inscribed medallion and certificate from Premier Eva Aariak.
